Taking the Temp: Seasonal Device Usage

While the ever-present need for internet connectivity does not waver, we can identify seasonal trends in the way that we use our devices, with usage fluctuating depending on the time of year.

For example, sport seasons, academic calendars, and holidays understandably have an impact on the usage of devices such as TVs, smartphones, or gaming consoles.

This month, Plume IQ examines how the onset of summer may impact device usage. Our analysis compares data from the beginning of the year through the end of May to data from June in the United States to identify some of these usage trends.

The data indicates that device usage varies between the two time periods based on the day of week in some cases. For example, from January through May, the number one day for data transmission by computers and laptops is Saturday, but in June it shifts to Tuesday.

Streaming devices, on the other hand, did not vary between the two time periods. Sunday remains the top day.

Sundays are the biggest day for smartphone usage from January through May, however Tuesdays emerge as the most in demand usage day in June. Interestingly, Plume IQ found that the mix of device usage is similar across the time periods - even as the usage on particular days fluctuate. For example, regardless of the day, smartphones still account for 15% of data transmitted over the two time periods.

Seasonality is understandable - a smart managed WiFi solution is one that understands and even predicts those changes and adapts accordingly. That said, we hope you all get to unplug and enjoy some summer holiday time offline!

If telcos wish to successfully differentiate their broadband services around overall quality of experience (QoE), it is critical that they drive greater engagement on their home Wi-Fi app. To help its customers achieve this goal, Plume offers its HomePass services suite, which provides four main core services: home Wi-Fi self-optimization, customer control and personalization, full-home cybersecurity, and home awareness features via Wi-Fi motion detection technology.

#PlumeStrong

Plume and Street Child announced the continuation of their partnership for a third consecutive year. This year, the collaboration will focus on an ambitious new project to support the development of 15 rural secondary schools in Sierra Leone, providing quality education to over 1,500 children each year, as well as teacher training and the establishment of a community agriculture project to help sustain the school.

Fahri Diner, Founder and CEO of Plume, shared his thoughts on the ongoing partnership:

In 2020, #PlumeStrong began as an internal initiative during the pandemic to support the mental and physical health of our global workforce. Four years later, we have raised over €1,300,000 and, through our partnership with Street Child, we have been able to extend our impact globally. In September 2024, we will be kicking off the #PlumeStrong Cycling Challenge in Zurich with our friend and ambassador, Tadej Pogačar, the cycling superstar, [now three-time!] Tour de France champion, and recent winner of the Giro d’Italia. I could not be prouder of what this team has achieved and am excited for what our future holds.
